Employers, Individuals Changing Healthcare Benefit Course In 4Q

As the presidential race winds down, thoughts turn to what the new administration will do about healthcare. No matter who the winner turns out to be, there is one reality: Consumer Directed Healthcare (CDH) in general is taking hold and Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) in particular are growing.

At the same time, small and medium size companies and individuals are taking action. For more details, click here.

Earlier this year Information Strategies, Inc. (ISI) made the bold prediction that HSAs would double from January 2008 to January 2009. At the time, there was much scoffing but based on results and reports of recent months, that plateau seems to be within reach.

What is an accurate count of CDH covered individuals varies by organization, but the numbers are growing.
With healthcare issues taking a backseat to the economy, there hasn’t been too much talk by the Presidential candidates.
However, there have been some newly identified trends that will impact national policy in 2009.
Based on polling and interviews conducted September 20 through October 20 of this year, ISI surfaced the following trends:
Companies are revising healthcare benefit plans to be less costly and comprehensive in the wake of the economic downturn.
Individuals are acting proactively and seeking out personal health insurance rather than relying solely on employer sponsored plans.
Employees are being more proactive in using benefits in the last quarter of this year because of fears they will not be available next year.
Small business owners are revisiting already approved plans seeking adjustments.
